I always take time during the first week of February to look at the signs of the coming spring. Just noticing the green shoots popping up, and the leaf and flower bud starting to show on bushes and branches takes the edge off the still dark days of winter. I put a bunch of not so bittter bittercress [picture to left] in my new loaf of bread. This should be interesting.
It helps too, to notice that the days are truly getting longer. Groundhog's day, with its weather prediction is the current perversion of the old habit of looking for spring. It made my day to see the video of a cute, big groundhog biting the ear of some silly Wisconsin mayor who could not even figure out the groundhog legend. Youtube has some good stuff on occasion:
