Friday, Nov 1:  "An Evening of Improv"  Don't underestimate the value of a good laugh!  If you haven't seen Martin, Craig, Nate, Brian and Tim do their stuff, it's time to start. Pre-show begins at 7:30 and features The Magic of Elliott Hofferth. $5 at the door. Improv starts at 8 pm. Anacortes High School.

Saturday, Nov 2:
"Climate Change in the PNW.  How has our local climate changed and what can we expect next?"  Patty Glick, Senior Climate Change Specialist at the National Wildlife Federation, will share the latest science on the impacts of climate change on coastal habitats and ecosystems in the PNW. She'll discuss the latest national Climate Assessment, due in final form in early 2014. She will also present ways you and your community can help promote solutions, including reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for unavoidable impacts. 1-3pm at the Padilla Bay Center. Free, but call  428-1558 to register.

Tuesday, Nov. 5: Skillshare Workshop: "Front Yard Foraging"  Melany Vorass-Herrera, author of The Front Yard Forager, will introduce you to the fun and delicious world of foraging. After 22 years as an environmental policy analyst and technical author, Herrera now teaches foraging workshops up and down the west coast. From the yard to the parking strip, in city parks and along streets, food is abundant and free for the taking! Melany will have books on hand for those who'd like to purchase her field guide and recipe book for the 30 most readily found edible urban weeds.  Come and learn how to supplement your diet with these nutritious plants.  Free; no registration required. Skill-share workshops are a project of Transition Fidalgo & Friends to help grow community resilience. 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm, Anacortes Library   

Thursday, Nov. 7: MJB Properties Hosts Meeting Rezone Request    MJB will discuss its 28th St. rezone proposal. The company is requesting a rezone from industrial to commercial of about 10 acres located generally north of 28th, west of the TT Trail and east of R Ave.  The new zone would allow for a building up to 105,000 square feet. (The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the rezone Wednesday, Nov. 13, 7 pm).  7:30 pm at the Anacortes Depot

Friday, Nov. 8: "Projecting Future Scenarios for Fidalgo Bay – Modeling Water Circulation and Coastal Changes"  A presentation by Dr. Eric Grossman, Research Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey.  Dr. Grossman will discuss how the US Geological Survey is using 3D computer modeling to examine coastal processes and inform ecosystem restoration and hazard mitigation in the Salish Sea.  How might climate change, sea-level rise and land use influence coastal communities, ecosystem restoration outcomes, and Fidalgo Bay?  Citizen science can help the USGS and its partners improve their models through research and monitoring – find out how you can get involved as a volunteer!  For further information, contact Wendy Steffenson at wendys@re-sources.org or 360-733-8307. Skillshare Workshop: "Sprouting Seeds & Grains for Winter Nutrition" with Julianne Ash.  Julianne will cover the history and nutritive value of sprouts, as well as which seeds to sprout, where to purchase them, how to tend and grow them, and ways to create great-tasting salads from your indoor sprout garden. If you like to watch things grow, sprouting is a delight! If you want to add fresh nutritious greens to your winter menu, sprouting is a must! Julianne is an educator, farmer, and registered nurse with with over 25 years practice in the healing arts. She is passionate about growing herbs and sprouts and using them for vibrant health and good, nutrient-dense food. Free; no registration required. Tuesday, Nov. 26:  Seventh Generation Supper.  Join us for our monthly community supper meeting and a presentation on "Powering Our Future." Eric Shen will bring us up to date on Skagit's first Community Solar project; Cory Ertel, PSE Community Services Manager, will give an overview of PSE in Skagit County; and Pinky Vargas, PSE's Energy Efficiency Manager, will discuss the Anacortes Green Power Challenge. Suggested dinner donation: $5/adult, $3/children 10 and under. Please bring your own place settings! Doors open 5:45 pm at the Anacortes Senior Center; supper is at 6 pm.

After 22 years as an environmental policy analyst and technical author, Herrera now teaches foraging workshops up and down the west coast. From the yard to the parking strip, in city parks and along streets, food is abundant and free for the taking. 

Books will be on sale. Herrera's field guide includes recipes for 30 of the most readily found edible weeds. From dandelion to day lily, nipplewort to nettle, pineapple weed to purslane, there’s a salad bowl full of fresh edibles just waiting to be collected and put to good use! Come and learn how to supplement your diet with these nutritious plants.
